Kale or borecole (Brassica oleracea Acephala Group) is a vegetable with green or purple leaves, in which the central leaves do not form a head.
It is considered to be closer to wild cabbage than most domesticated forms.

The species Brassica oleracea contains a wide variety of vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, and brussels sprouts.
The cultivar group Acephala also includes spring greens and collard greens, which are extremely similar genetically. Pieris rapae is one of the most well known pests of the plant.

Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, and rich in calcium.
Kale is a source of two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Kale, as with broccoli and other brassicas, contains sulforaphane (particularly when chopped or minced), a chemical with potent anti-cancer properties.

Boiling decreases the level of sulforaphane; however, steaming, microwaving, or stir frying do not result in significant loss.

Along with other brassica vegetables, kale is also a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells.

Kale has been found to contain a group of resins known as bile acid sequestrants, which have been shown to lower cholesterol and decrease absorption of dietary fat. Steaming significantly increases these bile acid binding properties.

Dark chocolate may not only help you shed those unwanted pounds, it provides a host of healthy benefits that puts other indulgences to shame.

Consuming an ounce of dark chocolate three days a week can help your body digest the food you consume, inhibit insulin resistance, reduce stress and cortisol levels and may prevent you from overeating. It is also proven to lower blood pressure, increase circulation, create a feeling of bliss and stimulate energy.

20140112-214923.jpg
A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa contains :

*11 grams of fiber.
*67% of the RDA for Iron.
*58% of the RDA for Magnesium.
*89% of the RDA for Copper.
*98% of the RDA for Manganese.

It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium.

There are three types of fat in dark chocolate:

The good, monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, and two saturated fats, palmitic and steric acid.
The good news is that these fats do not affect your cholesterol levels and can be considered a healthy fat; this is essential for those who are trying to lose weight.

Losing weight requires that you consume fewer calories than you burn each day.
Nibbling on a few unsweetened cacao nibs before each meal may help you make healthier choices when it comes to meal time.
When combined with a healthy diet and exercise, dark chocolate can give you an extra boost toward reaching your weight-loss goals.

Cacao bean (also Anglicized as cocoa bean, often simply cocoa and cacao; Mayan: kakaw; Nahuatl: is the dried and fully fermented fatty bean of Theobroma cacao, from which cocoa solids and cocoa butter are extracted.

They are the basis of chocolate, as well as many Mesoamerican foods such as mole sauce and tejate.

The cacao tree is native to the Americas. It may have originated in the foothills of the Andes in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America, current day Colombia and Venezuela, where today, examples of wild cacao still can be found.
However, it may have had a larger range in the past, evidence for which may be obscured because of its cultivation in these areas long before, as well as after, the Spanish arrived. It was first cultivated by the Olmecs at least 1500 BC in Mexico.

The cocoa bean was a common currency throughout Mesoamerica before the Spanish conquest.

The apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family (Rosaceae).
It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits, and the most widely known of the many members of genus Malus that are used by humans.
Apples grow on small, deciduous trees. The tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found today.
Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, and were brought to North America by European colonists.

According to Chinese Medicine: Apples strengthen the heart, quench thirst, lubricate the lungs, decrease mucous and increase body fluids.

According to a Brazilian study, eating an apple before a meal helped women lose 33 percent more weight than those who didn’t.

What are the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar?

A few lab studies have found that ACV may be able to kill cancer cells or slow their growth.

It can help regulate blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol.

Rich in malic acid which gives ACV its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

May help improve bowel irregularity and helps to remove toxins from the body at a faster rate.

It can help clear up skin conditions and blemishes.

ACV helps with weight loss by breaking down fats so that your body can use them rather than store them.

How to use Apple cider :

Bath solution: The next time you get ready to slip into a warm bath, add one to two capfuls of apple cider vinegar. It draws toxins out of the body, leaving behind toned and moisturized skin.

Deodorant: The smell of apple cider vinegar is putrid, but it pales in comparison to underarm odor. Rub a little into your pits and the odor will eventually neutralize.

Hair rinse: Skip harsh shampoos and wash away buildup with an apple cider vinegar rinse. When used as a follow-up to baking soda, this do-it-yourself treatment makes strands shinier, reduces frizz and seals cuticles. It also simulates the scalp to promote hair growth.

Green tea is made from the leaves from Camellia sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing.
Green tea originated in China, but it has become associated with many cultures throughout Asia. Green tea has recently become more widespread in the West, where black tea has been the traditionally consumed tea. Green tea has become the raw material for extracts used in various beverages, health foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetic items.
Many varieties of green tea have been created in the countries where it is grown. These varieties can differ substantially due to variable growing conditions, horticulture, production processing, and harvesting time.

20131222-093149.jpg

Tea consumption has its legendary origins in China of more than 4,000 years ago.
Green tea was first brewed in 2737 BC during the reign of Emperor Chen Nung (or Shennong, in pinyin transliteration).
Green tea has been used as both a beverage and a medicine in most of Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, to help everything from controlling bleeding and helping heal wounds to regulating body temperature, blood sugar and promoting digestion.

20131222-093301.jpg

Green tea contains a variety of enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, sterols, polyphenols, carotenoids, tocopherols, vitamins, caffeine and related compounds, phytochemicals, and dietary minerals. Numerous claims have been made for the health benefits of green tea based on chemical composition, in vitro and animal studies, though results in humans have been inconsistent and few clear benefits for humans have been demonstrated.
There is also evidence suggesting consuming large volumes of green tea, and in particularly green tea extracts, may cause oxidative stress and liver toxicity.

About Rogner-Bad Blumau

Designer Spa resort with grass covered roofs and surreal rainbow facades.

The hot spa in the Rogner-Bad Blumau resort was first drilled in 1978. Thankfully water was discovered, prompting the building of a hotel – not an oil well. Inaugurated in 2000, Rogner Bad Blumau has a simply amazing eclectic design with the roof of the main buildings grass covered, following a rolling hill profile.

Some of the rooms are underground, with windows facing lit courtyards, while others follow the rolling design of the surrounding landscape. The spa is at the centre of the complex, with an award winning gourmet restaurant among the facilities. The spa has a variety of saunas and health facilities and offers a number of wellness programmes. The hot springs also provide heat and generate power for the resort.

Hundertwasser’s artistic vision shares common themes, bright colours, organic forms, strong individualism, and a rejection of the straight line. Calling straight lines “the devil’s tools”, his architectural work is comparable to Antoni Gaudí. His work has been used for flags, stamps, coins, posters, schools, churches, and most impressively a public toilet in his adopted home of New Zealand. Hundertwasser considered New Zealand as his official home, and no matter where he went in the world, his watch was always set to New Zealand time.

Walking around the resort coupled with the de-stressing spa facilities makes for a surreal experience.

Architecture

Architecturally designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in harmony with nature, Rogner Bad Blumau is laid out in four irregular quarters. The ring-shaped inner and extensive outer spa area constitutes the centre. A wide variety of living, bathing and restaurant areas branch out from the centre into the open landscape, offering countless opportunities for peaceful retreat.

Uneven floors, “trees of life”, “dancing windows”, colourful and overgrown roofs – each building tells a story.

About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue divide and grow without normal control. It is a widespread and random disease, striking women and men of all ages and races. It is the most prevalent cancer in the world today, with about 1.3 million people diagnosed annually. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, and at this time, there is no cure.

But there is hope. Thanks to heightened awareness, early detection through screening, improved treatment methods and increased access to breast health services, people have a greater chance of survival than ever before.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure national website, komen.org, offers comprehensive information about breast cancer risk factors, early detection and screening, diagnosis and treatment. Developed in conjunction with the Harvard School of Public Health, the site offers a one-stop resource for all the latest information on the disease.

Education and Early Detection Increase Survival

  • There is no known cure for advanced breast cancer.
  • Detection of breast cancer at an early stage provides a greater chance for a cure and more treatment options.
  • When the disease is confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is more than 95%.
  • More Caucasian women than African American women develop breast cancer. However, more African American women die of breast cancer.
  • Approximately 80% of breast cancers occur in women 50 years and older. The mortality rate would decrease by 30% if every woman over 50 was informed and followed the early screening guidelines.

Breast Cancer in African American Women

susan komen

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among African American women. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death among African American women, exceeded only by lung cancer. In 2011, an estimated 26,840 new cases of breast cancer and 6,040 deaths are expected to occur among African American women.

Breast cancer incidence in African American women is lower than in Caucasian women. Breast cancer mortality, however, is 39 percent higher. Although breast cancer survival in African American women has increased in recent decades, survival rates remain lower than among Caucasian women. From 1999-2006, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer among African American women was 78 percent compared to 90 percent among Caucasian women. There are many possible reasons for this difference in survival. Factors that may all play a role include:

  • Biologic and genetic differences in tumors
  • Presence of risk factors
  • Barriers to health care access
  • Health behaviors
  • Later stage of breast cancer at diagnosis
