Vidal Sassoon
Vidal Sassoon became the hairdresser of the Swinging Sixties

Vidal Sassoon, the hairdresser whose styles became synonymous with the Swinging Sixties, has become a CBE on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Now 81, he revolutionised hairdressing and went on to found a multi-million-pound international hair and beauty products empire.

Born in London, he spent eight years in an orphanage before becoming a hairdresser.

He started his career as a shampoo boy in a barber’s shop.

Iconic cut

Sassoon’s father left when he was five, and his mother had to put him and his brother into a Jewish orphanage because she could not afford to keep them. Vidal began working for the famous hairstylist Teasy Weasy Raymond, in Mayfair, eventually opening his own shop in 1958.

His clients included the Duchess of Bedford, and models Jean Shrimpton and Mary Quant.

His straight, geometric cut became a staple on every high street in Britain – bringing in the era of the “wash and go” haircut.

Later in the 1960s, he moved to California, where he still lives.

In the 1980s, Sassoon lent his name to manufacturers of haircare products and salons.

Married four times, Sassoon had four children with his first wife Beverly Adams.

BRIGITTE BARDOT

BRIGITTE BARDOT

AN EXHIBITION featuring rarely seen vintage prints of Brigitte Bardot, Brigitte Bardot and the Original Paparazzi, will be on display at James Hyman Gallery from September 3 to October 3, 2009.

Focusing on one of the great fashion icons of the twentieth century, the exhibition is being presented at the same time as London Fashion Week (September 18 to September 22) and coincides with Bardot’s 75th birthday on September 28.

Brigitte_Bardot 3

The exhibition traces the development of a new genre of photography, showing how Bardot and the paparazzi created a whole new image of womanhood, female sexuality and youth fashion via a candid a photographic style that swiftly replaced the more controlled imagery produced by film studio publicity units.

The exhibition also times with the 50th anniversary of the birth of paparazzi, and includes vintage prints by the most famous of all the paparazzi: Tazio Secchiaroli (1925 – 1998), the basis for Fellini’s character in his seminal film La Dolce Vita (1959).

The show also includes many beautiful and rarely seen prints, including Bardot on the set of Godard’s seminal film Le Mepris; chiming perfectly with Jean Paul Gaultier’s current interest in the film and the inspiration for his 2010 collection, to be modeled by Bardot lookalike Lara Stone at London Fashion Week.

BRIGITTE BARDOT 7

Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot  (born 28 September 1934) is a French animal welfare/rights activist and a former actress, fashion model and singer.

In her early life Bardot was an aspiring ballet dancer. She started her acting career in 1952 and after appearing in 16 films became world-famous due to her role in the controversial film And God Created Woman. During her career in show business Bardot starred in 48 films, performed in numerous musical shows, and recorded 80 songs. After her retirement from the entertainment industry in 1973, Bardot established herself as an animal rights activist. During the 1990s she became outspoken in her criticism of immigration, some aspects of homosexuality and Islam in France, and has been convicted five times for “inciting racial hatred“.

Brigitte Bardot was born in Paris to Anne-Marie ‘Toty’ Mucel (1912–1978) and Louis ‘Pilou’ Bardot (1896–1975). Her father had an engineering degree and worked with her grandfather in the family business. Toty was sixteen years younger and they married in 1933. Brigitte’s mother enrolled her and her younger sister Marie-Jeanne (‘Mijanou’, born 5 May 1938) in dance. Mijanou eventually gave up on dancing lessons to complete her education, whereas Brigitte decided to concentrate on a ballet career. In 1947, Bardot was accepted to The National Superior Conservatory of Paris for Music and Dance and for three years attended the ballet classes of Russian choreographer Boris Knyazev. (One of her classmates was Leslie Caron). By the invitation of her mother’s acquaintance, she modeled in a fashion show in 1949. In the same year she modeled for a fashion magazine “Jardin des Modes” managed by another friend of her mother, journalist Hélène Lazareff. She appeared on a 8 March 1950 cover of ELLE.and was noticed by a young film director Roger Vadim. He showed an issue of the magazine to director and screenwriter Marc Allégret, who offered Bardot the opportunity to audition for “Les lauriers sont coupés” thereafter. Although Bardot got the role, the shooting of the film was canceled, but it made her consider becoming an actress. Moreover, her acquaintance with Vadim, who attended the audition, influenced her further life and career.

She participated in various musical shows and recorded many popular songs in the 1960s and 1970s, mostly in collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg, Bob Zagury and Sacha Distelincluding “Harley Davidson”, “Je Me Donne A Qui Me Plait”, “Bubble gum”, “Contact”, “Je Reviendrais Toujours Vers Toi”, “L’Appareil A Sous”, “La Madrague”, “On Demenage”, “Sidonie”, “Tu Veux, Ou Tu Veux Pas?”, “Le Soleil De Ma Vie” (the cover of Stevie Wonder‘s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life“) and the notorious “Je t’aime… moi non plus“. Bardot pleaded with Gainsbourg not to release this duet and he complied with her wishes; the following year he re-recorded a version with British-born model and actress Jane Birkin which became a massive hit all over Europe.

When you stuggle for answers,

and are trying to cope,

Believe in your heart,

Always have Hope!

Hope takes you farther, is ready to go,

Hope holds the vision, when others say no.

Hope  is the river, strong, full and deep,

Hope knows no limits, no mountain too steep,

Hope for a treatment, hope for a cure,

Believe in a miracle, holy and pure.

Hope hangs on , believes in the best,

Hope is a journey, each minute a test.

When your spirit is weakened,

and you ‘re trying to cope,

Always have Hope.

athina-e-doda

Doda Miranda and Onassis were married on December 3, 2005, after which it is believed that she assumed a hybrid version of the Onassis and Miranda names, thus apparently dropping the Roussel name. The bride’s father and stepmother were not at the ceremony, though her half-sister Sandrine Roussel was invited.

Some anecdotes of the wedding refer to the consumption of 1000 bottles of champagne (around one per person). Most witnesses were Brazilian horse-riders. Athina and Doda decided not to publish photos of the wedding (as they were going to do) after a television report some days before the wedding about the death of Athina’s mother. The couple reportedly asked for no presents and asked their guests to donate the money intended for presents to charity.

Doda Miranda  and Onassis has one stepchild, Viviane de Miranda e Dorsa.

More recently, Miranda and Onassis  has been trying to reach out to the Greek trustees of the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation in her bid to become President of the Foundation. She has expressed an interest in learning Greek and has renewed her Greek passport. She also hopes to be on the Greek equestrian team at the next Olympics.

Their plans were to stay in São Paulo, which caused Nelson Pessoa, the captain of the Brazilian Equestrian Team, to regret publicly that Doda Miranda has forsaken his international career, and (informally) call upon the shipping heiress’s influence on him, to persuade her then-fiancé to return to Europe and compete there. Lately, as her interest in competing in the 2008 Summer Olympics grew, the couple announced that they would return to Belgium to train following their honeymoon.

The Miranda”s have since been training with Nelson Pessoa in Belgium, where they have many horses and where Doda Miranda’s daughter, Viviane, is enrolled in a private school in Brussels.

BEZERRA DE MENEZES

lar_foto_bezerra

Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes Cavalcanti was born in the old neighborhood of Freguesia do Riacho de Sangue (Stream of Blood), today Solonopole, in Ceara, Brazil, on August 29.

In the year of 1838, Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes Cavalcanti, started studying at the public school of the Friar’s Villa, where in only ten months he sufficiently prepared himself to reach the degree of knowledge of his master, who was responsible to guide his first educational phase. At a very early age, he revealed to be extremely intelligent. When he was eleven years old, he was able to commence the course on Humanities. At thirteen, he knew Latin so well that he not only gave classes to his colleagues, but also was called to replace his teacher every time he had to be absent.

His father, Antonio Bezerra de Menezes, was captain of the old militias and lieutenant – colonel of the National Guard; he was a stern man, extremely honest and of irreproachable character. His wealth was derived from his cattle’s farm. He spent large sums of money in politics and in the assistance of friends and relatives, because of his good-natured heart. Those people, however, only looked for him in order to exploit his charitable feelings, and he ended up compromising his fortune. Upon realizing that his debts equaled his possessions, he expressed to his creditors his intention of giving them everything that he owned, in order to pay off the debt. The creditors, being his friend, refused to accept such a proposal, replying that he could pay them when and how he wanted.

In spite of the insistence of the elderly honest man, his creditors didn’t change their minds. Mr. Antonio Bezerra de Menezes proposed them to remain as the administrator of what one-day was his fortune, only using from it the strictly necessary for the maintenance of his family, who changed from a previous comfortable condition to a life of privations.

Encouraged by the firm purpose of being guided by his father’s honest character, Bezerra de Menezes, with a reduced amount of money, given to him by his relatives, was taken by the firm purpose of overcoming all obstacles and headed to Rio de Janeiro in order to follow the career that his vocation inspired him to pursue: Medicine.

In November of 1852, he entered as intern resident at the Mercy Hospital. He graduated from the College of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro, in 1856, presenting a doctorate thesis about: “Diagnosis of Cancer.” It was when he started to sign only Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes. Due to the recommendation

Given by his teacher Manoel Feliciano Pereira de Carvalho, at the time Chief Surgeon of the Army, Bezerra de Menezes was named his assistant, assuming the position of Surgeon – Lieutenant, 1831. He died in Rio de Janeiro, on April 11th, 1900.th, 1857, he applied for a position of titular member of, 1857, and the election took place on May 18th.In 1858 he applied to a position, as substitute, in the Area of Surgery in the College of Medicine. Due to the recommendation given by his teacher Manoel Feliciano Pereira de Carvalho, at the time Chief Surgeon of the Army, Bezerra de Menezes was named his assistant, assuming the position of Surgeon – Lieutenant.

NIKK SIXX

nikkisixxpic

“Formats are going to change because this is what the people want. It’s not what the labels want.”
Nikki Sixx

Nikki Sixx (born December 11, 1958) is an American bassist, author, photographer, and the main songwriter for the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe. He has also played bass for glam metal band London, the experimental band 58, the hard rock band Brides of Destruction and more recently, Sixx:A.M.

Sixx was born on December 11, 1958 in San Jose, California. He was partially raised by his single mother, Deana Richards, and by his grandparents after his father left the family. He moved in with his grandparents, while his mother toured with bands as a back-up singer. Sixx relocated several times while living with his grandparents.

While living in Jerome, Idaho, Sixx became a teenage vandal, breaking into neighbors’ homes, shoplifting, and being expelled from school for selling drugs. His grandparents sent him to live with his mother, who had moved to Seattle. He lived there for a short time, and learned how to play the bass guitar having bought his first instrument with money earned from selling a prior guitar he had stolen.

At the age of 17, he struck out on his own, moving to Los Angeles and working jobs at a liquor store and selling vacuums over the phone while he auditioned for bands. He unsuccessfully auditioned for the Randy Rhoads version of Quiet Riot, as well as the band Sister, with Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P. before joining London, a local glam outfit whose lineup saw numerous changes and whose major claim to fame was that its singer, Nigel Benjamin, had sung with a late version of Mott the Hoople. Sixx soon left the band.

NIKK

In 1981, Sixx founded Mötley Crüe with drummer Tommy Lee, later being joined by guitarist Mick Mars through an ad in the local newspaper he was reading, then by singer Vince Neil with whom Tommy had attended high school. The band decided to self-record their debut album, Too Fast for Love, which was subsequently released in November 1981 on the band’s own Leathür Records label. After signing with Elektra Records they re-released the album. The band then went on to record and release Shout at the Devil, raising the band to national fame.

In 1989, Sixx was a featured guest artist on the album Fire and Gasoline by Steve Jones, formerly of the Sex Pistols. Sixx co-wrote and performed on the song, “We’re No Saints”.

In 1991, Sixx played bass on “Feed My Frankenstein” on Alice Cooper‘s Hey Stoopid album. Sixx also co-wrote the track “Die For You”, along with Cooper and Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars (who plays guitar on the song).

In 2006 Mötley Crüe completed a reunion tour featuring all four original members and embarked on a co-headlining tour with Aerosmith, called “The Route of All Evil”. On June 24, 2008, Mötley Crüe released their ninth studio album, Saints of Los Angeles, with Sixx credited as either writer or co-writer on all tracks.

LIVING AND LEARNING

SIXX AM NIKK SIXX

“I forgive my mom for being a psycho and my dad for being a loser. ”
Nikki Sixx

“I harbored a lot of resentment as a teenager and as a young adult. I still have a problem with authority, I’m trying to listen!”
Nikki Sixx

With the formation of Sixx:A.M. and the release of The Heroin Diaries, Nikki Sixx teamed up with an already existing charity known as the Covenant House and created his own branch called Running Wild in the Night . In addition to partially funding the services the Covenant House provides on its own, Sixx’s division also provides a creative arts and music program, allowing the beneficiaries of this program to discover an answer to their problems that is better than drugs. Because Sixx has been dealt an upper hand along with his success, he has been able to negotiate with people in his industry to provide the program with musical instruments and software . Sixx has arguably prevented thousands of potential drug users and rehabilitated teenage addicts from continuing to dabble in the world of drugs, as the Covenant House helped almost 78,000 youth at risk last year.

Sixx didn’t just establish the program. A portion of the profits from Sixx:A.M.’s album The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack is donated to help the Covenant House. Sixx also continues to auction off personal items to fund Running Wild in the Night. As of April 2009, he had raised over $100,000.  In addition to monetary contributions, Sixx has made personal and emotional ones. George Lozano, the director of Covenant House California, said that Sixx is “passionate about the cause; he can relate to the youth in our program and they can relate to him. He’s a great role model for these kids.”

Nikki Sixx has conquered the rock world and now the literary world. Sure, it’s just a diary, but the honesty displayed is unmatched by anyone. Real life has never been captured so well as in Heroin Diaries and even those not familiar with Sixx’s musical record will be entranced with his tales of debauchery and hopes for redemption. Heroin Diaries is not recommended book, but a must read for any and all music fans. This book takes biographies to a new plateau and sets a standard I think few will be able to match.
