What is a What is a Hardwood?

A hardwood tree is any tree that is an angiosperm or a monocotyledon, and not a conifer. Hardwood trees generally produce flowers and fruit and are deciduous, or lose their leaves in winter. Hardwood trees produce wood of varying “hardness,” though in general wood from these trees is physically “harder” than the wood derived from softwood, or conifer, trees. Hardwood trees produce wood that is dense and heavy, making not only structurally strong but exceptionally beautiful as well.

IMG_7946-1.JPG

Hardwood vs. Softwood

In general, hardwood is heavier and stronger than softwoods. Because of its physical properties, hardwood is more resistant to termites, weathering, rot and decay. Softwoods are used more commonly than hardwoods in everyday projects because they are less expensive and easier to work with. Softwoods are the primary wood used in framing wooden homes and buildings, and make up the majority of the wood found in plywood and less expensive furniture.

Advantages

In general, hardwood is much stronger than softwood, making it the ideal wood for making furniture that must withstand high levels of use. Hardwood retains its strength and is less likely to split when worked, so it is invaluable in furniture manufacturing. The unique grain patterns found in hardwoods not only make them strong and durable, but also make them aesthetically pleasing. A simple application of wood stain and clear varnish help accent the natural beauty of the wood and protect the surface from premature wear and tear.

Bi Couture

Haute couture is the pinnacle of fashion – a made-to-measure service in which perfection of technique underpins every detail but remains invisible to the eye.
At Sassoon we apply the same bespoke philosophy to hair – our cuts and colours are designed to be unique to every individual with suitability being the deciding factor above all.
Our version of the couture technique is based on the principles of ABC; a geometrically precise method of cutting and colouring hair that uses line, graduation and layering in combination with colour placement to create a look that is entirely suited to the individual.
This is Sassoon. This is Hair Design.

One of the biggest trees I ever seen in my life it was imposing, I just felt like sitting there and imagined all the centuries that went by. So beautiful, so powerful. Majestic !

Early years

The castle stands on the site of an earlier house, which was built on the foundations of the medieval palace of the Bishops of Winchester, who owned this estate from the 8th century.
The original site was recorded in the Domesday Book. Since 1679, the castle has been home to the Carnarvon family.

In 1692, Robert Sawyer, a lawyer and college friend of Samuel Pepys, bequeathed a mansion at Highclere to his only daughter, Margaret, the first wife of the 8th Earl of Pembroke.
Their second son, Robert Sawyer Herbert, inherited Highclere, began its picture collection and created the garden temples.
His nephew and heir Henry Herbert was created Baron Porchester and 1st Earl of Carnarvon by George III.

As of late 2012, the Earl and Lady Carnarvon have stated that a dramatic increase in the number of paying visitors has allowed them to begin major repairs both on Highclere’s turrets and its interior.
The family attributes this increase in interest to the on-site filming of Downton Abbey.

The family now live in Highclere during the winter months, but return to their cottage in the summer, when the castle is open to the public.
