The Cape Cod cottage is a style of house originating in New England around the 17th century.

20140114-142311.jpg
It is traditionally characterized by a low, broad frame building, generally a story and a half high, with a steep, pitched roof with end gables, a large central chimney and very little ornamentation.

Traditional Cape Cod houses were very simple: They were designed symmetrically with a central front door surrounded by two multi-paned windows on each side.

Homes were designed to withstand the stormy, stark weather of the Massachusetts coast.

20140114-142422.jpg
Modern Cape Cod architecture still draws from colonial designs.

Colonial Revival Cape Cod houses are very similar to Colonial Cape Cod houses, but some have the chimney at one end of the living room on the side of the house.

High end replicas were designed by traditional architects, for example Boston architect Royal Barry Wills (1895–1962).

2022 QATAR STADIUM

The Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup bid is the successful proposal from the government of Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

qatar2022worldcuplogo

Qatar, with a population of 1.69 million people, will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, son of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani the then Emir of Qatar, was the chairman of the bid committee.

Qatar promoted their hosting of the tournament as representing the Arab World, and has drawn support from across the member states of the Arab League. They also positioned their bid as an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Arab World and the West.

ZAHA HADID NEW PROJECT FOR THE FIFA QATAR WORLD CUP GAMES 2022.

Qatar gave a feel of what the World Cup would be like by holding a friendly match between Brazil and Argentina. Furthermore, people coming from different nations visited Qatar for this match and strengthened the image Qatar would depict of their interest in the World Cup 2022. Additionally, Qatar hosted the 2011 Asian Cup which had the lowest attendance for the cup in 11 years, since the tournament was held in Lebanon. It was considered a warm-up for 2022.

Al Wakrah Stadium is truly the start of something AMAZING!

The stadium will be located in Al Wakrah, the southern-most city hosting the GAMES.

Designed by AECOM in association with Zaha Hadid Architects, the new 40,000-seat Al Wakrah Stadium is a proposed venue for matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™. Inspired by the dhow boat that carried generations of local fishermen and pearl divers, the stadium weaves together Qatar’s past with its progressive vision for the future. Sustainable materials and practices will be used throughout the stadium and the pitch and spectator stands will be cooled to a perfect temperature for football.

London Gateway is a major new development under construction on the north bank of the River Thames in Thurrock, Essex. It comprises a large new deep-water port, which will be able to handle the biggest container ships in the world, as well as one of Europe’s largest logistics parks, providing effective access (by road and railways) to London and the rest of Great Britain.

The complex will make use of modern technology to increase productivity and reduce costs for shipping lines and the logistics industries.

The development is intended to increase the capabilities of the Port of London in handling modern container shipping, and help meet the growing demand for container handling at Britain’s ports.

The project is being undertaken by DP World, one of the largest marine terminal operators in the world.

Construction began in February 2010, and is expected to take several years, with the port and logistics park completed in stages.

The royal Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its very distinct French Renaissance architecture which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures. The building, which was never completed, was constructed by King François I.

Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley ; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for François I, who maintained his royal residences at Château de Blois and Château d’Amboise. The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed, though with several doubts, to Domenico da Cortona. Some authors claim that the French Renaissance architect Philibert Delorme had a considerable role in the château’s design, and others have suggested that Leonardo da Vinci may have designed it.

Chambord was altered considerably during the twenty-eight years of its construction (1519–1547) during which it was overseen on-site by Pierre Nepveu. With the château nearing completion, François showed off his enormous symbol of wealth and power by hosting his old archnemesis, Emperor Charles V at Chambord.

In 1792, some of the furnishings were sold and timber removed. For a time the building was left abandoned, though in the 19th century some attempts were made at restoration. During the Second World War art works from the collections of the Louvre and Compiègne were moved to Château de Chambord. Now open to the public, in 2007 the château received 700,000 visitors.

Why was Graz selected as a City of Design?

Initially, political support provided by government structures benefited the creative industries overall. The Styrian government’s Business Department laid the foundation for setting up and funding the Creative Industries Styria GmbH. Since 2007 the Creative Industries Styria have been continuously working on the application and project of UNESCO City of Design.

The application follows a joint initiative by the Styrian government’s holder of the Economy and Innovation portfolio, Dr. Christian Buchmann and Graz’ mayor Mag. Siegfried Nagl, who are both solid supporters of the creative economy. That goes hand-in-hand with a statement of Lena Hoschek, a fashion designer from Graz:

“Being a City of Design means avoiding to subordinate young wild creative people to both everyday life and politics.”

Mur Island | Acconci Studio Architects

A twist in the river, a node in the river: the node is an island. The island is a circulation-route: a dome that morphs into a bowl that morphs into a dome. The bowl functions as a theater; the inside of the bowl is lined with bleachers – transparent bleachers, made of grating or perforated metal – that step down to a stage at the bottom of the bowl. When the bowl is not being used as a theater, it functions as a public space, a plaza, in the middle of the river; each line of bleachers waves in and out, it expands and contracts – instead of sitting straight ahead, facing front, you can sit face-to-face, for everyday conversation.

President Building: Kunsthaus Graz (Cook and Fournier) – Graz, Austria

Kunsthaus Graz (Graz Art Museum) sets itself apart from other art galleries and museums in that it avoids the pure white clean walls traditional to this buildings function, instead opting for a playful, organic and unusual form and finish.
The art museum designed by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier is a fantastic example of blobby architecture, and has been dubbed by its designers as the “friendly alien”.

The second outer skin of the building is a translucent warm blue acrylic plastic. Set beneath the outer skin are 930 fluorescent ring shaped lights, each effectively a pixel, which combined create a dynamic media.
