Throughout the past thirty years, the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of South Florida has been to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families. We have done that through the operation of the Ronald McDonald House by providing a home-away-from-home for families with critically ill or injured children undergoing treatment at South Florida area pediatric hospitals.

Each year with the generous support of various partnerships Ronald McDonald Houses serves over 500 children and families of seriously ill or injured children who are receiving care in the South Florida area hospital. No other organization duplicates this service.

Staying at the Ronald McDonald House has many positive impacts on the child, the family, and the medical providers. The House provides children and their families’ simple access to each other any time of the day or night which helps keep families together and enhance their coping skills during their child’s hospitalization. Having families close by ensures that the child has access to top care and facilitates the transition to normal activities with the resources, support and encouragement they need, and reduces the level of stress in the child and parents. Medical providers and hospitals report that their partnership with the Ronald McDonald House strengthens the culture of family-centered care, improves patient satisfaction, improves adherence to treatment, and increases outpatient treatment options.

SOJOURN BEAUTY

Coarse And Thick Hair “I recommend not washing every day.Your natural oils will work their way down to your ends (Really! Once or twice a week is fine.). When you do shampoo, wash twice. It’s harder to get through, and really get a good scalp cleansing when there is a lot of thick hair.Sojourn Thermal Protection Straightener, $24, available at Shine .

Sojourn’s Thermal Protection Straightener is great — apply from roots to ends on wet hair. It’s lightweight, and protects the hair from the heat. Try it after air drying if you want to achieve less volume and body. A great keratin treatment would do wonders for people with coarse hair. And now Liqwid carries the non-formaldehyde Keratin that’s not bad for your health.”

*Fire-engine red hair?  Chemically-treated? The secret to long-lasting colour and treatments is Colour (white)!

When coloring hair, closing the cuticle to seal in and protect the color is a must. A lower pH scale will help with this. A slightly acidic pH (3.5-4.5) helps seal the cuticle and prevent fading. To maintain, restore hair to its natural pH level (4.5-5.5) when shampooing and conditioning. – Rob Guimond, Director of Chemistry.

VIDAL SASSOON BIOGRAPHY

Born in the East End of London, Vidal Sassoon had no intention of becoming a hairdresser, preferring to fight Osmond Mosley’s fascists, who were once again stirring up racial hatred on the post-war streets of London.

He grew up in a small London flat, until his father left home. The five year old Vidal and his little brother survived six years in a orphanage, before their mother remarried and could afford to care for them again. When he was 14, she dreamed one night of Vidal in a barber shop, and she immediately took the boy to Cohen’s Beauty & Barber Shop, and apprenticed him to Cohen. If he must be a hairdresser, Vidal decided he would have to be the best, so he went religiously to the theatre to tune his ear and voice to “posh” English, and found work in the West End. A few years after his return he set up his first salon – a tiny room on the third floor above Bond Street. In 1956, Sassoon married his first wife Elaine Wood but this relationship ended in 1958, when she left him for British water-skiing champion David Nations. For nine years he experimented with new cuts and techniques, searching for simple, elegant styles. By 1963, he had pioneered the Bob and Five-Point Cut, which made him famous and gave him the title “the founder of modern hairdressing”. His went on to give his name to a chain of hair salons in the UK and the United States, and his range of haircare products continue to enjoy massive sales worldwide. In 1967, Sassoon married actress Beverly Adams, with whom he had four children including daughters Catya (born 1968) and Eden (1973), and sons Elan (1970) and David. They divorced in 1980. He moved to the US in the 1980s where he sold his name to a number of hair care product manufacturers including Proctor & Gamble. Former salon colleagues also bought his salons and the right to use his name, expanding his empire in the UK and US. Sassoon married his third wife, dressage champion and former fashion model Jeanette Hartford-Davis in 1983 but they divorced shortly afterwards. He wed Rhonda C Sassoon in 1992. He ended his partnership with Proctor & Gamble in 2003 after suing them for focusing on their own products rather than his.  He sold his branch of hair salons in 2002 and revealed he was no longer associated with the hair care products using his name in 2004. In 2009, he was honoured with a CBE from the Queen and in 2010, a film documentary was devoted to the hair stylist. ‘Vidal Sassoon: The Movie’ was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival to much critical acclaim. Sassoon was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009, although this was not revealed until 2011. He has been undergoing treatment in both Beverly Hills and London.

OVERVIEW

The most famous hairdresser in the world tells his fascinating life story

Vidal Sassoon’s extraordinary life has taken him from an impoverished childhood to global fame as the father of modern hairdressing, whose slick sharp cutting took the fashion world by storm. His memoir begins with surprising and often moving stories of his early life—his time at the Spanish & Portuguese Jewish orphanage in Maida Vale, warring with fascists in London’s East End, and fighting in the army of the fledgling state of Israel in the late 1940s. He then discusses his extraordinary career, during which he cut the …

STEPHANIE HIRSCH

“Religion is for people that don’t want to go to hell. Spirituality is for those of us that have been there.”
There is no better saying that captures the emotion of Stephanie Hirsch’s artwork.
Her work delves into the deeper or double meaning of words and sayings with both humor and enlightenment. “Initially, sayings can be static,” Stephanie says, “but once we apply our life experiences they can have infinite meanings.”
To convey her messages, she bridges the gap between fashion and art by utilizing beads and embroidery, which give her artwork a three-dimensional depth. The metallic sheen of the medium also serves to remind us that the mantras can shine a positive light on our inner struggles, both literally and figuratively.

     by Stephanie Hirsch

Stephanie Hirsch is an Artist, Entrepreneur, Designer and Author.
Stephanie Hirsch appropriates once iconoclastic images that have become somewhat commonplace fashion logos and re-infuses them with the anarchistic spirit from whence they came. Through her use of beads, sequins and embroidery, Hirsch’s canvases are literally ‘illuminated’ with words of enlightenment and hope. Her simple text and quips often cause the viewer to question their moral standings and beliefs, all the while offering aesthetically charged images that are simultaneously foreign and familiar.
Hirsch states, “Mental and physical blockages in life are often self- inflicted, both literally and figuratively. I explore my journey through life as a quest to uncover the truth around me and to express my position through the multifaceted meanings inherent to the words we use and actions we do.”
Hirsch had her first solo show at The Lyons Wier Gallery Project Space in Nov 2011. Her work was most recently chosen by Mercedes Benz to be their featured artist during Fashion Week in their VIP lounge at Lincoln Center Feb 2012.
In 1996 she created the inca resort lifestyle brand. The boutique design house featured collections of luxury swim and resort wear. Entirely self-taught, Stephanie’s designs have been praised for her unparalleled attention to detail along with its flattering and superior fit, and it has also brought her wide acclaim and international recognition as a fashion designer.
Following the birth of her son Hunter, her journey as a mother led her to write the book Mother Nurture: Life Lessons from America’s Best and Brightest. The book is a conclusion of her interviews with the mothers of 52 highly successful people around the world and was published in 2008 by Harper Collins.
Stephanie has also collaborated with the premier indoor cycling studios SoulCycle. In bringing her design expertise and shared vision to reinvigorate the soul, she created their fitness line of comfortable yet stylish cycling apparel.
She resides in New York and Bridgehampton with her husband and two young boys.
